Wins 1st and 2nd prize in the international student competition Archi-Bau Awards

  14-01-2009

ARCHI-EUROPE/ARCHI-STUDENTS organizes a competition “ARCHI-BAU AWARDS” focussing on 3 categories for architects and one for students in architecture on the occasion of BAU, the international construction fair in Munich as of January 12th to January 17th , 2009.

The competition recieved a total of 432 submissions from all over the world.

For the Student Green Building Category, Tim Nørlund submitted 2 projects, Himmelbau Kreuzberg and Environment Camp.

The jury selected a list of 10 nominees for the category, including both submissions by Tim Nørlund. After the final judging 3 projects was awarded by jury. One "Prize of the jury" (1st place) and two "Special Mentions" (2nd and 3rd place).

Tim Nørlunds design for a sustainable mixed-use tower in Berlin, Himmelbau Kreuzberg, won 1st place (Prize of the Jury) with his other submission, Environment Camp, won 2nd place (Special Mention).

Jury comments:

Himmelblau Kreuzberg (1st Place)
Destined as a Berlin suburb, the apartment building could become an architectural signal to draw attention to a previously underprivileged area. The tower has been drawn like a vertical city which favours variety and ecological building: natural ventilation as a result of the 2m space in the double façade, atriums, solar panels, wind mill, the use of river water provides cooling.

Environment Camp (2nd Place)
Temporary and versatile pavilion system developed for tropical regions, and easy to assemble and dismantle. A series of frames form the interconnection and integrate the wall-, floor-, and roof elements. The textile fibre roof provides protection from the sun and good natural ventilation. The jury noted the sophisticated construction system in materials that facilitate construction and transport.

Norlund Architects wins the international 'Sheffield Parkway Iconic Bridge' competition

  24-01-2008

After weeks of intensive design work, a project presentation and an interview with the judges in Rotherham, England, our entry was selected as winner of the open international RIBA organized competition.

From the RIBA Press Release:

The new bridge will provide an important route over the A630 Sheffield Parkway, a busy dual carriageway which links the heart of Sheffield City Centre and parts of Rotherham, with the M1 motorway.   It will also provide a vital safety route, since the existing route across the Parkway is noted as one of the top ten most dangerous crossings in the UK.
The judging panel, chaired by RIBA Adviser Nik Randall, of Space Craft Architects, included representatives from the promoters - Rotherham and Sheffield Councils, and Yorkshire Forward.  The judges were looking for a design that would be a 'pleasure to cross, that responds to the local landscape, is deliverable and beautiful to look at'.

The competition produced an exceptional international response with entries from 14 different countries. The other four teams shortlisted to stage two were:

Arup Associates, London
DLG Architects, London
Satellite Architects, London with Elliott Wood Partnership
Tony Leung, Hong Kong with Ove Arup & Partners, Sheffield

Based upon a simple 'O' ring design, the winning design was considered to be both inspired and inspiring: the expression of the structural simplicity was particularly liked, it was felt that the immediacy with which the form of the 'O' ring will be understood will provide an orienting device in the landscape, appearing different from each approach. The clean lines and form of the support ring will provide an unexpected but appropriate intrusion into the undulating green landscape, whilst the simple 'line' of the walkways provides a counterpoint to the ragged canopy of the trees. The incorporation of simple and effective lighting will help it to respond to the climate, the season and local events.

Scheme shortlisted in international bridge competition

  13-11-2007

Our entry for the 'Sheffield Iconic Bridge' Competition has been shortlisted for the second and final stage. More information about the project will be available soon.

RIBA PRESS RELEASE:

A shortlist of five designs has been chosen for the next stage in the Sheffield Parkway footbridge competition. They are:

  1. Tim Norlund Jensen, Denmark with Ramboll Whitby Bird, London
  2. Satellite Architects, London with Elliott Wood Partnership
  3. DLG Architects, London
  4. Arup Associates, London
  5. Tony Leung, Hong Kong with Ove Arup & Partners, Sheffield

Competitors were set the challenge of designing a bridge that is 'a pleasure to cross, responds to the local landscape, is deliverable and beautiful to look at'.   The bridge will provide a route over the A630 Sheffield Parkway, a busy dual carriageway which links the heart of Sheffield City Centre with the M1 motorway. The competition was open and international leading to 109 entries from around the world. Designs were reviewed and discussed during five rounds of judging over two days which led to the final selection.

The final five shortlisted entries were felt to most suitably meet the ambitions of the project. Whilst some are more developed than others, it was felt that each described a strong idea and had a realistic chance of winning.

The final cut was extremely hard. Chair of the panel and RIBA architect adviser for the competition was Nik Randall of Space Craft Architects who said:
"Drawing up a shortlist presented a very difficult task for the Jury.  However, it was felt that each of the five shortlisted entries described a strong idea with the potential to deliver a beautiful, practical and memorable bridge".

The competition is being organised on behalf of Sheffield and Rotherham Councils, with support from Yorkshire Forward.
The shortlisted teams will each receive a £7,000 honorarium, and will meet with the judging panel on 11th December to discuss their concepts further. A winner will be
selected shortly afterwards.
